Grooming Your Dog
October 26, 2007 on 11:32 am | In Grooming Articles |Whoever said that a dog is mans best friend was exactly right, they truly are. They generally love without condition or expectation which makes them even more loyal than many human beings. Yet, they are often neglected and taken for granted. Keeping your dog well groomed is just a matter of respect. It not only benefits your dogs’ health and appearance but it gives you quality time with your pet. This is a great time to pass on praise and show your pet he/she is truly loved and appreciated. Getting your dog into a regular routine can be easily done by starting out with just a few minutes at a time. The more praise and attention you give the less frustrating it is for both you and your pet.
How many times has your dog got that awful odor and you decide in the heat of the moment that a bath is needed? Most often this leads to a chase. Sure you always win but the atmosphere is a tug of war between you and your pet rather than the enjoyable time it could have been. Bathing your dog isn’t really that hard to do. If you bathe him/her in the tub you may choose to lay a bath mat first to help catch the loose hair. This will prevent the drain from clogging. In bathing, you can use a hose if necessary. Lather him or her up with some shampoo that’s especially designed for a dog. May people use a flea and tick shampoo product. If you want to go the extra mile they even make conditioner for your dog. This may be a blessing for dogs with longer hair. Either way it helps make the coat soft and shiny. Towel dry him or her after the bath and if you choose you can dry your pet further using a blow dryer. This may also aid in the brushing out part of the routine. As the hair dries the brush tends to flow more smoothly through thicker, longer hair. Now you have a sweet smelling dog you both can live with.
Clipping your dogs’ nails is also beneficial to the both of you. However, there is a vein which runs into each nail. You need to be very careful that you don’t clip this vein as it can cause a very painful wound for your pet. Oral hygiene is also important to your dog. Believe it or not, they can develop gum disease. There are guides to show you how to brush if you need an aid. Finally, as with cats mites can get in their ears and restrict their ability to hear well not to mention, make them feel like they are going insane. Regular cleanings with a Q-tip will help you identify any potential concerns.
In short, keeping your dog healthy and happy will only build the incentive for the respect and care he/she gives to you. They truly are a wonderful friend and worth all the effort you put into them.
