Grooming Your Cat
October 26, 2007 on 11:32 am | In Grooming Articles |Your cat has two separate layers of hair and both need to be maintained. The top layer is referred to as the protective or guard layer. It is slightly longer than the rest of your cats’ hair. The secondary layer is thicker and has a wooly type feel. The proper way to groom your specific cat has a lot to do with the breed of the cat because certain types have different needs.
A cat with shorter hair rarely needs to be groomed but taking the time for a quick brush through is nurturing and certainly won’t cause any harm. This will also help loosen the dead hairs caused by shedding and rid them from your cat preventing much difficulty with hair balls. Long haired cats should be brushed daily and may need occasional bathing. Use only shampoos and other products which are recommended for a cat. Using products designed for other animals or humans may cause damage. This is especially important when it is in regards to flea and tick products. A product used for a dog or animal other than a cat can cause severe damage.
Keeping your cats nails clipped can also be important if you keep him or her indoors. However, you must be extremely careful when clipping. Going too far down toward the foot can cause a wound which may require medical care. If your cat is fidgety, you may want to leave this to a groomer.
Many pet owners give no thought to oral hygiene when it comes to their pets. However, maintaining cats teeth will help reduce plaque and prohibit a gum disease from forming. Finally, you should give close attention to your cats’ ears. You can clean your cats’ ears by using a Q-tip. A heavy wax buildup could implicate that your cat has mites. This is a condition that should be treated by a veterinarian. Without continuous cleaning these mites may go unnoticed and can cause serious damage to your cat. Your cat will greatly appreciate the time you spend keeping it healthy and clean. Purrfect grooming adds nine lives worth of love between you and your cat.
